DBS Checks for Individuals
Individuals are not permitted to request a Standard or Enhanced DBS application on their own accord because only organisations can request a high level disclosure on behalf of a staff member or volunteer.
This leaves many individuals who are wanting a high level DBS Check in a quandary, particularly if they are self-employed and working in a regulated environment.
Can Individuals apply for a DBS Check?

The DBS state that an individual cannot apply for an Enhanced or Standard level check. The reasons for this are as follows:
- An individual cannot authorise and verify their own ID. If they proceeded to do so, their disclosure would immediately become invalid and removed from the system.
- Individuals cannot ask themselves exempt questions i.e. do you have any criminal convictions?
- Enhanced and Standard level checks require a disclosure recipient who is going to make an informed recruitment decision.
Self-employed individuals are requested to obtain a criminal record check by organisations that will be utilising their services. However, it is only a basic level disclosure which is available to them.
