DBS Checks For Volunteers
If you have volunteers working within your organisation and need to request a DBS check for them, Care Check can process this for you. Volunteer checks are available in standard and enhanced level checks, depending on the role the applicant will have.
Individuals aren’t eligible to apply for a volunteer DBS check by themselves. DBS Applications can only be made by an organisation or charity that they are voluntarily working for.
Who qualifies for a Volunteer DBS Check?
To be eligible for volunteer checks, an applicant must be involved in regulated activity with children or adults.
To quality for a Volunteer DBS Check, the person also must not:
- Directly benefit from the role which the DBS check is requested for
- Receive pay for the role (except for travel and other approved out-of-pocket expenses)
- Be there as part of a work placement
- Be enrolled on a course that requires them to do this job
- Be in a trainee position that leads to a full-time position or qualification
DBS Definition of a Volunteer
By Disclosure and Barring Service standards, the definition of a volunteer from The Police Act 1997 (Criminal Records) Regulations 2002 is:
“A person who is engaged in any activity which involves spending time, unpaid (except for travel and other approved out-of-pocket expenses), doing something which aims to benefit some third party and not a close relative.”
A volunteer will not fall within the definition of regulated activity if someone supervises them to the statutory level, however, they will still be able to receive an Enhanced level criminal record check, but the barred lists will not be selected.
Alternatively, if an individual is a volunteer who is undertaking tasks or duties which are unsupervised, this will fall into the category of regulated activity and the individual will require an Enhanced DBS with the appropriate barred lists selected.
How long does it take to process a check for a volunteer?
Generally, 60% of enhanced volunteer applications complete within 24 hours, however, 85% of all applications completed within 5 days. This timescale also applies to Standard level checks.
