Basic DBS Checks Online

A Basic DBS check (also known as a Basic Disclosure Check or previously, a Basic CRB Check) is a background check into an individual’s history and police records in order to reveal any unspent convictions. A conviction becomes ‘spent’ after a certain amount of time has elapsed, at which point the offender’s record is updated, and crimes are typically removed (some serious crimes, such as those involving children or other vulnerable members of society, may remain).

How long this is depends on the type of offence and the sentence given, however the minimum period of time for a conviction to become ‘spent’ is 3 months, and applies specifically to conditional cautions. A Basic DBS check will not check the barred list.

A Basic DBS Check is available to anyone for any reason. For example, if you are applying for a specific job role that doesn’t require a DBS check, your potential employer can still request this level of disclosure as part of their employment policy. A Basic DBS Check is also required in order to apply for an alcohol licence and in some cases, a visa.

Care Check offer a Basic Disclosures service for organisations that need to obtain basic background checks for their staff, or potential employees. Increased compliance has caused a rise in the number of employers requesting different levels of DBS checks, especially Basic DBS Disclosures, to ensure safety within the workplace and to protect their organisation from possible internal threats. It also makes for a smooth recruitment process. The process is simple, and anyone is eligible.

We also offer Basic DBS and Disclosure Scotland Checks to individuals needing to obtain a check for themselves. If you are an individual looking for a Basic DBS or Disclosure Scotland Check click here to go to the individuals page.

Basic Disclosure Check FAQs

As a business owner, it is only natural that you would want to protect your business from any safeguarding issues or potential threats. Many employers shield themselves from burglary, however, they ignore internal threats from their own staff and this can be detrimental to a business, specifically if an employee’s role sees them gain access to sensitive data. A Basic DBS Check will add this extra layer of protection, giving you peace of mind that your business is in safe hands.

  1. Peace of mind for the business owner
  2. Reduces the risk of internal fraud
  3. Stock protection
  4. Reduces employee theft
  5. Improves safety within the workplace
  6. Ensures recruitment process is efficient and productive

A Basic DBS Disclosure entails a search of the PNC for all the details of current convictions, but the certificate result will only reveal unspent convictions and conditional cautions. If a conviction becomes spent any time after a certificate has been issued, this will not be disclosed.

When you choose Care Check to undertake basic DBS checks for your employees, the application process is very straightforward; the majority of Basic applications are completed within 24-48 hours, however, on occasion some applications can take up to 14 days to process if there are internal queries.

  • An organisation would register here and a company account would be set up within 15 minutes. The HR users on the account would be sent login details as well as an organisation reference.
  • The applicant would complete the application form and produce ID documents to their employer.
  • The employer would then complete the ID verification, approve the application and submit it to us.
  • Care Check will oversee the application, countersign it and send it off to the DBS for processing.
  • The application then completes and the employer receives a completion notification; a hard copy certificate is later produced.

We offer competitive prices with Basic DBS Disclosures starting from as little as £28.00 depending on company volumes. To see our full pricing list, please click here full pricing.

There are many jobs where getting a DBS check is required – roles in which you might be working with children or the elderly will require a standard or enhanced DBS check, for example.

A basic DBS check, however, could be requested for any job in any profession, if the employer asks for it.

To apply for a basic DBS check you need one piece of identification, such as a passport or driving licence. You will also need one piece of documentation to prove your address. This can be a utility bill, or a bank or credit card statement. It can also be a driving licence, providing this hasn’t been used to prove your identity.

Full details of documentation required for standard and advanced DBS checks can be found here

A basic DBS check will check for all ‘spent’ convictions and conditional cautions – these are convictions or cautions that have lapsed after a certain amount of time, rendering them ‘spent’ under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

If the conviction or caution is unspent, it means that the rehabilitation period has not yet passed, and that they [the conviction or caution] will appear on a basic DBS check.

A basic DBS shows any cautions or convictions that are ‘unspent’ under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

A basic DBS check can go back as far as the police have records. As mentioned above though, only unspent convictions will show. If the caution or conviction has been completed (known as “spent”), it won’t appear on a basic DBS check.

Until the ISA and CRB merged to create the DBS, DBS checks were known as CRB checks, so a ‘basic CRB check’ is simply the old name for a ‘basic DBS check’.

No. No level of DBS check – basic, standard or advanced – appears on credit reports or affects your credit rating.

No. There is no ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ for any level of DBS check. A basic DBS check simply shows the applicant’s unspent cautions or convictions (if any). It’s then up to the employer to decide whether to proceed with employment.

Yes, you can request a basic DBS Check yourself. In addition to requesting a basic DBS check yourself, it can also be requested by your employer.

Employers can request a basic DBS check, or they may inform you that you must request one yourself (note that you can only request a basic DBS check yourself; if a standard or enhanced DBS check is required, your employer will have to request this on your behalf).

Some jobs require you to have a DBS check. Your employer will let you know which type of DBS check you require.

There is no official expiration date for DBS checks, whether it’s a basic, standard or enhanced check. Employers are the ones who decide when a new check is needed.

That said, the general consensus is that a DBS check should be repeated every three years.
