The DBS (formerly known as CRB) identity checking guidelines have been strengthened in order to improve public protection

We have set out the ID format into the separate routes that an applicant can undertake. Each applicant must attempt to exhaust each route before moving on to the next option.

ROUTE 1

3 documents to be seen
1 document from Group 1
further 2 documents from Group 1, 2a or 2b
At least one of the documents must show the applicant’s current address.

ROUTE 2

3 documents to be seen
plus an external ID check
1 document from 2a
2 further documents from Group 2a or 2b
At least one of the documents must show the applicant’s current address

ROUTE 3

5 documents to be seen
A certified copy of a UK birth certificate
plus 4 further documents
1 from Group 2a and 3 from 2a or 2b
At least one of the documents must show the applicant’s current address

FINGERPRINTS

(unable to process online)
Paper application form required
Attendance at a local police station for fingerprints to be taken

Primary ID documents:
1. Current valid passport
2. Biometric residence permit (UK)
3. Current driving licence – photo card (UK/Isle of Man/ Channel Islands and EU) (Full or Provisional)
4. Birth certificate (UK/ Channel Islands) (Issued at time of birth)
5. Adoption certificate (UK)

GROUP 2a

Trusted Government Documents:
1. Current driving licence – photo card (all countries other than those in Group 1) (full or provisional)
2. Current driving licence – paper version (UK/Isle of Man/ Channel Islands/ EU) (Full or provisional)
3. Birth certificate (UK/Channel Islands) (Issued after the time of birth)
4. Marriage/Civil Partnership Certificate (UK/Channel Islands)
5. HM Forces ID Card (UK) 6. Fire Arms Licence (UK/ Channel Islands

GROUP 2b

Financial and Social History Documents:
1. Mortgage statement (UK or EEA) (Non- EEA statements not accepted) **
2. Bank/building society account opening confirmation letter or statement (Uk) *
3. Credit card statement (UK or EEA) (Non – EEA statements not accepted) *
4. Financial Statement e.g. pension, endowment, ISA (UK) **
5. P45/p60 Statement (UK/Channel Islands) **
6. Council Tax Statement (UK/Channel Islands) **
7. Work Permit/Visa (UK Residence permit, valid up to expiry date)
8. Utility Bill (UK) – Not mobile phone *
9. Benefit Statement (UK) e.g. child allowance, Pension *
10. Document from central/ local government/ government agency/local authority (UK/Channel Islands) e.g. DWP, employment service, HMRC, job centre, Social security *
11. EU National ID card – must be valid
12. Cards carrying the PASS accreditation logo (UK/Channel Islands) – must be valid
13. Letter from head teacher or College principal (16-19 year olds in full time education in the UK
